Let's try to complete our work on the role of government in the economy.
Good Idea/ Bad Policy
We've set up the government as a way to solve problems in the marketplace. Well... it doesn't always turn out that way. Let's check out some well intended ideas that didn't turn out so great.
U.S. versus Google
Google may be one of the biggest companies in the world. The U.S. Justice Department certainly thinks so. Last week its case against Google went to trial. Let's listen to Planet Money's episode on this case and decide who you would side with. Please note that this episode aired on October 21st, 2020 so there have been developments since then. You can learn more about what is happening now here.
When you have reached your decision, please head to Google Classroom to defend your choice. Your to-do listPlease open the Nearpod app. We will resume the presentation on the role of government momentarily.

Keep an eye out for examples of economics in the world around you between now and the next class. Your examples could come from your own life or from the media but they must be specific examples of something that has happened.
Bus in the snow
There is a bus filled with forty people traveling up a snowy hill on a college campus. As the bus makes its way up the hill, it becomes stuck. The driver tells the passenger that the bus is carrying too much weight and ten of the passengers must get off and walk the remaining quarter of a mile (400 meters) up the hill.
Economic Systems
An economic system is the method used by a society to distribute goods and services. It must answer three questions.
Let's begin our investigation by checking out the Economic Systems Case Study on Google Classroom. There you will have to weigh on whether or not capitalism serves us well or not. Your to-do list

Please post your response to Google Classroom at the Real World Economics Examples: Thinking like an economist. Build a WWII BomberDuring WWII, Allied Generals were presented with the diagram above which indicated where the bullet holes on their bombers were found. They wanted to help more bombers return from their missions and had the opportunity to add more armor. The question was where should they add it. They did not have the resources to cover the entire bomber, which also would have made it less maneuverable and fuel efficient. Where would you tell the Generals to put the armor? Please head to Google Classroom to respond. Scarcity in Pop Culture |
