U2 IncidentThe Military-Industrial Complex
A great deal of the Cold War was about keeping up, or staying ahead of the Soviets. It changed the way our military operated. The United States suddenly had developed a peacetime military industry, something that, in his Farewell Address, President Eisenhower warned us about. Do you think the United States should maintain a peacetime military industry or return to the way it was before the end of World War II, when companies changed production to meet the needs of the military. Please respond with your opinion supported by at least one reason.

A game to start
To start today, we are going to play a game.
Each of you were shown a piece of paper and I have recorded what is on it. Do not reveal to your classmates what is on your slip of paper. The goal of the activity is to form a team of as many non-X members as you can. You can win points, and candy, today by accomplishing one of the following.
Here are some tips...
You will have three minutes to play. Good luck! Communists in the United StatesAppearing before the U.S. Senate
It is 1950. You are a government employee in the State Department. Today there is a message for you at your office. The Senate Foreign Relations Committee wants to question you about your political beliefs. Committee members want to know your ideas about communism and the Communist Party. They might ask you questions about your friends and the people you work with.
Joe McCarthy says he has proof that there are over 200 communists working in the State Department and that your name is on that list. There are strong state and national laws to punish communists. Communists can be fined and sent to jail. Even people who are only accused of being communists have lost their jobs and businesses. You are not a communist but you know some people who are. You also know some people who are not communists but who like some of the Communist party's ideas. You must appear before the committee or you could go to jail. You do not have to answer the committee's questions, however. The Fifth Amendment says that Americans can refuse to answer a question. But, if you do this, the committee might think you are trying to hide something. The First Amendment protects Americans' freedom of speech. But now the government is punishing people for their ideas! The message says that you should appear before the Senate committee next week. Your job and reputation could depend on how you answer the committee's questions. Anyone you talk about could be questioned by the committee. What will you do?
Please record your response and cite at least one reason why you chose the plan that you did. Please submit your work to eBackpack when you are done. This assignment is worth ten points. The spies and the people who caught them!Your to-do list:
