Wrapping up the Third Quarter
Grades are due for teachers on Friday so I would like any make up or corrected work that you would like to submit by the end of the school day (3PM) on Wednesday.
Your to-do list
We're going to keep work on our three threads (Current Events, Personal History, and Content) this week.
- For Current Events, please complete two out of the six daily quizzes based on NPR's Up First. - For our Personal History, I would like you to continue documenting what life is like for you during this time. I would be surprised if later in life you weren't asked what living through the coronavirus was like. I really enjoyed seeing what everyone was up to over the course of the week. It was both heartening and hopeful to see all the submissions showing you have settled into a different lifestyle and are making the best of it. - For our content thread this week, I would like you to listen to the story of Abdi Iftin. Please listen to "Abdi the American" from This American Life. As you listen, I would like you to recreate his journey. You have two options for how to complete this. You could tell his story as if he was tweeting throughout the process of gaining entry into the United States or you could do it through emojii. No matter the medium you decide to use, please complete the graphic organizer associated with it. This means you will need to describe ten events in Mr. Iftin's story. Please also include one question for Mr. Iftin. You can find all the resources you need on Google Classroom under the Abdi the American assignment.

Your to-do listFirst, I want to note that I am ending the Third Quarter. This means that the assignments that were due on Sunday, March 22nd represent the end of the Third Quarter. While there will be assignments due this week, they will be counted on the Fourth Quarter. I caught up a good deal on grading over the weekend but I know I have more to do as well.
Some of your classmates gone AWOL (Absent without leave) over the past week. While I have concerns about them regarding class, during this time I also simply have concerns about them as human beings. If you know of someone who has not been participating, please check on them and them reach out to someone at the school. We want to make sure all of you are ok during this challenging time, We're going to keep work on our three threads (Current Events, Personal History, and Content) this week. - For Current Events, please complete two out of the six daily quizzes based on NPR's Up First. - For our Personal History, I would like you to start documenting what life is like for you during this time. I would be surprised if later in life you weren't asked what living through the coronavirus was like. - For our content, I would like you form a more informed opinion on some of the current immigration issues we looked at last week. Please see the Current Issues in Immigration assignment on Google Classroom for more details. Lastly, please complete the survey that I have posted on Google Classroom. I would like some feedback as to how class is going now that we have moved online. I want to judge how I am doing and your feedback is essential to me being able to do that. Please be honest. Your to-do listThis week please complete the following tasks.
- Complete the Immigration Debate assignment. - Respond to the five questions (DACA, Birthright citizenship, Building a wall, Separation of children and parents, and Banning countries) regarding current immigration issues. - Complete two of the daily quizzes on NPR's Up First Broadcast or send me an article on a current event of national or international importance with a summary and a question about it. - Prove that you are alive. That could mean that you have e-mailed me, participated in the class Google Hangout, shared screenshots of social media posts showing how you are spending your time. If you need an example of the latter, check out mrrabysvaccination on Instagram. What do you know about migration? There is tons of debate as to whether Mark Twain actually made the statement above, but the sentiment suits today's lesson well.
Please head to the What we know about migration assignment on Google Classroom. Please start off by writing down ten statements about migration that you believe are true. Once you have done that, head the Council on Foreign Relations' page on Migration. They have a number of resources that will help you learn about migration around the world. Please treat it like a museum: you can choose your own path through the resources, you don't have to follow the one that they prescribed. As you explore, record ten facts that you learn, especially if they surprise you or contradict something you thought you knew about immigration. Our next step will be to share what we have learned with our classmates. You will need to record what you learn from them as we complete the activity. To conclude, think about all that you have learned today. What is the one item that you learned that you think everyone should know about migration? Be sure to submit your work to Google Classroom when you are done. Your to-do list:
