AMERICA'S RESPONSE TO A CHANGING WORLD
The Derek Chauvin VerdictIn our last class, we began to discuss what we knew about the Derek Chauvin Verdict and what questions we had. Our next step will be to allow you to investigate the verdict further. Please head to the Derek Chauvin verdict activity on Google Classroom. There you will read an article from the New York Times and offer your own thoughts in response to several questions. Police Reform in the United StatesThe murder of George Floyd is just part of a larger issue that faces the United States: what to do regarding our police. It is yet another difficult question for us to grapple with that has no simple answer. Please head to Police Reform in the United States on Google Classroom to learn more about the debate, what is being done, and respond to some questions on this issue. The CensusThere was some big news regarding the Census that came out right after school on Monday. Before we dive into that news next week, let's learn more about the Census. Please listen to this episode from Civics 101 on the Census and record five items that you learn about the Census at the Census question on Google Classroom. Want to see what filling out the Census is like? Check out the video below.

Your to-do listA lot of items were in the news over break. Hopefully you took some time off from following the news but let's take a shot at identifying some of the issues that came up. Each of the images below ties in with a news story. Do you know the story behind each image? The Derek Chauvin VerdictOn Tuesday, April 20th, former Minneapolis police officer Derek Chauvin was found guilty in the death of George Floyd. Before I begin to pose more questions to you, please head to Google Classroom to K&W on the Derek Chauvin Verdict/Death of George Floyd. Please post what you know about these events there and what questions you have. Our next step will be to allow you to investigate the verdict further. Your to-do listThe first task I would like to address is wrapping up some assignments that have dragged on a bit, specifically the What is going on at the border. I have not received a completed version of this from most of you so let's start there. If you happen to finish that task before we move on, check Powerschool to see if you have any missing work. Who would you let in?The United States was built on immigrants. There aren't many of us who do not trace our roots back to someone who settled in the United States after travelling from a foreign land. As we look at U.S. History, there are even groups that are famed for their travels to the United States. Often these groups arrived at different times, though. What if they all showed up at once? And we could only let one of them in? Who would you take? Please head to the Historical Immigrants question on Google Classroom to choose which of our famous immigrant groups you would let into the country. Where to next?We have some flexibility around what what topic(s) to investigate over the remainder of the year. While I have some ideas specifically around looking at the direction the Biden administration is taking the country, I would like to get some feedback from all of you as well.
Please head to the Where to next? question on Google Classroom to give me your feedback. What's going on at the border now?Much has changed at the border since Joe Biden took over as president. And much has remained the same. Please head to the immigration topic on AllSides to examine some articles covering recent events there. Please follow these steps in your investigation.

Course Sign-UpsThe Administration is still in a panic because so many of you have not signed up for classes for next year. Please take a moment in class today to do that.
