AMERICA'S RESPONSE TO A CHANGING WORLD
Your to-do listPlease make sure you submit your Abortion and the Constitution assignment to eBackpack. An update from the Supreme CourtThe Supreme Court has ruled on an Indiana abortion law. Like Planned Parenthood v. Casey, their didn't side solely with one side or the other. Here's an explanation of the ruling from the New York Times. And Missouri's last abortion clinic may close this week. And in another update, Louisiana seems primed to be the next state to tighten its abortion laws. Deadline for Fourth Quarter workIf you would like to make up any assignments from the Fourth Quarter, they must be submitted no later than the end of the school day on Friday, June 7th. Please note that is the first day of finals and school ends at noon that day. The end is nearCongratulations you've made it to the end of our course and the end of the year. It's time to get working on your final. At the beginning of the semester we looked at what your most important values were and we discussed several policy options or philosophies for the United States. Now that we have studied North Korea, the refugee crisis, climate change, and countless issues that you have brought to class during TCB, what do you feel the guiding principles for our country should be when addressing events in this changing world? Your task for the final is to address that issue. Check out the assignment below. There are more resources on eBackpack to help you through the process as well. I would like you to follow the process below as you create your final.
You have the remaining three classes to complete your work on this project. During that time, I would also like some feedback on how the course as a whole went this semester. What can I improve on for next year? Are there topics that I should add or delete? Are there elements of class that I should make sure I keep or remove? Please record your feedback here to help me do a better job for your classmates next year. Please keep in mind as you attack all of these tasks, that while you have time in class to complete these tasks, I expect that you will spend time outside of class working on them as well. Your finals are due the day of your class' exam.
Good luck and let me know how I can help you!

Your to-do listLet's wrap up our conversation on abortion by looking at Griswold v. Connecticut. Please take out the document we have been working with and complete the table on that case. What's going to happen next?Based on what you have learned today, what do you think is next for abortion rights? This is not a question of how do you feel about abortion rights but one about predicting the future. As we have discussed today, while there is momentum in past Supreme Court cases to uphold abortion rights, it is built on a weak foundation and the court has a more conservative lean to it. Record your prediction and at least one reason why you feel abortion rights will head in the direction you predict. Your answer should be at least five lines of writing. Please submit your work to eBackpack when you are done. Options for dealing with North KoreaWith two or three classmates, create a graphic organizer on a piece of poster paper like the one modeled below. Using the North Korea options file, complete the graphic organizer.
When you have completed each section of the organizer, add a small illustration to each box that helps to explain what the option is about. Once these steps are complete, please write a brief paragraph with your initial feelings about which option you feel is best. Be sure to include two reasons why. Submit a picture of your graphic organizer and your paragraph to the North Korea Options assignments on eBackpack. The graphic organizer is worth twelve points and the paragraph is worth another ten points, two for your opinion and four each for each supporting reason. Often dubbed "The Forgotten War", now it might be more important than ever. To get a better idea of the events of the Korean War, use the handouts that I have provided you with and the reading below to construct a timeline.

According to the Environmental Defense Fund, 290 million Indians live below the international poverty line of $1.25 per day so there is a need to develop. India is also in a place where it can have a huge impact on the planet. While its carbon dioxide emissions are less per capita than many places, its 1.3 billion (and growing) population means that even a small per capita impact can have a large total impact. |
